Nigerian Samson Adamu Makes History as CAF Confirms Him as Substantive General Secretary
His confirmation marks a historic milestone for Nigeria, making him the first Nigerian to occupy the top administrative position in the Confederation of African Football since its establishment.

Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a historic moment for the country and its representation in African football administration.
The confirmation, announced on Thursday, October 29, makes Adamu the first Nigerian to hold the position in CAF’s 70-year history. His appointment represents a significant development for Nigeria’s presence within the administrative structure of African football, placing a Nigerian at the centre of the organisation responsible for governing the sport across the continent.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has welcomed the development, describing it as an important achievement for Nigerian football.
Reacting to the announcement, the NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, expressed confidence in Adamu’s ability to deliver in his new position. He described him as a knowledgeable administrator with considerable experience in football management and said the federation would provide the necessary support to him in his new role.
Adamu’s confirmation follows several months of serving in an acting capacity. He assumed the position on March 29, 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator.
Before his elevation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Competitions and later became Director of Tournaments and Events. His responsibilities placed him within the organisation of major football competitions, giving him experience in managing the administrative and operational demands of continental tournaments.
His journey into football administration, however, began long before his appointment at CAF.
One of his notable contributions to the Nigerian sports industry was the establishment of COPA Lagos, an invitational beach soccer tournament designed to bring international beach soccer teams to Nigeria. The competition attracted teams from different parts of the world and helped demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to organise international sporting events.
The tournament’s success also contributed to Nigeria securing the hosting rights for the 2016 CAF Beach Soccer Cup of Nations.
His experience in organising competitions, coordinating stakeholders and managing sporting events subsequently strengthened his profile within African football administration.
Adamu’s appointment also brings attention to the growing importance of administrative leadership in the development of African football. Beyond the performances of national teams and clubs on the pitch, the organisation of competitions, management of resources, commercial partnerships and implementation of policies remain important responsibilities within the sport.
As General Secretary, Adamu will occupy a central administrative position within CAF, working alongside its leadership and member associations in managing the organisation’s operations.
CAF oversees major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations, the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. Its administrative decisions influence football development, competition management and the wider sporting ecosystem across its 54 member associations.
For Nigeria, having one of its football administrators occupy the position presents an opportunity for stronger representation within the continental governing body. However, the significance of the appointment will ultimately depend on the quality of leadership and contributions he brings to the organisation.
The development also comes at a time when African football continues to face conversations around governance, financial sustainability, infrastructure, competition organisation and the development of local talent.
Adamu’s professional experience places him in a position to contribute to these conversations while working within CAF’s existing leadership structure.
His confirmation is therefore more than an individual career milestone. It represents another opportunity for Nigerian expertise to contribute to the administration and development of football across Africa.
As congratulations continue to come in from the Nigerian football community, expectations will now turn towards the responsibilities ahead and the impact of his leadership on the continent’s football administration.
