Taraba Attack: Amnesty Says At Least 40 Killed as Death Toll Rises

At least 40 people were killed when armed men attacked Binnari village in Taraba State on Friday, October 23, according to Amnesty International, as conflicting early casualty figures highlighted the difficulty of establishing the full scale of the incident.

The attack occurred in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, where residents reportedly came under heavy gunfire from a large group of assailants.

In a statement released on Saturday, October 24, Amnesty International said the death toll had risen after additional bodies were discovered. The organisation also reported that homes, shops, motorcycles and food supplies were destroyed or taken during the attack.

The Nigerian police had initially confirmed 10 deaths. However, the figures reported by residents and Amnesty International were higher, suggesting that the initial count did not reflect the full extent of the casualties.

The latest reported figure of at least 40 deaths was attributed to Amnesty International and should be distinguished from the lower initial police count.

Residents report destruction and missing people

According to Amnesty International, the attackers looted food items and damaged property during the assault. The organisation said some victims had been burnt beyond recognition and that families were still searching for missing relatives.

Residents who spoke to news organisations described scenes of panic as people attempted to escape the gunfire.

Reports indicated that the assailants arrived in large numbers on motorcycles. The precise identities of the attackers and their motive had not been established in the reports available on October 25.

The uncertainty surrounding the number of missing people also means the full human toll may take further investigation to establish.

The attack has renewed attention on the security challenges facing rural communities, where residents can be particularly vulnerable when armed groups strike remote settlements.

Amnesty calls for investigation

Amnesty International condemned the killings and called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the incident impartially.

The organisation argued that authorities must do more than issue statements condemning violence. It called for stronger protection of vulnerable communities and accountability for those responsible.

The group also highlighted the need to support survivors and families affected by the killings and destruction of property.

An investigation would be expected to establish the sequence of events, identify those responsible where possible and determine whether security measures were adequate to protect residents.

As of October 25, the reports cited here did not establish that any suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack.

A wider security challenge

The attack adds to continuing concerns over armed violence in parts of northern and central Nigeria. Communities in affected areas have faced attacks involving killings, abductions, theft of livestock and looting of property.

Armed criminal groups commonly referred to as bandits have targeted rural settlements in several parts of the country. In other regions, security forces continue to confront insurgent groups and other armed organisations.

Although these threats differ in their organisation and objectives, attacks on civilian communities create similar urgent needs: reliable security information, emergency medical assistance, protection for displaced residents and investigations that can lead to accountability.

The Taraba incident also demonstrates the importance of timely, consistent reporting. Where initial official casualty figures differ from accounts provided by residents and rights organisations, authorities need to clarify the numbers as investigations progress.

The immediate priorities include establishing the final death toll, identifying missing residents, assessing damage and supporting affected families.

Authorities also face the challenge of reassuring communities concerned about further attacks and ensuring that security operations are responsive to local risks.

The available reporting does not yet provide a complete account of the attackers’ identities, their motive or the precise circumstances leading to the assault.

For families in Binnari, the consequences extend beyond the number of people killed. The loss of homes, businesses, food supplies and relatives can disrupt livelihoods long after the immediate violence ends.

Further updates from the Taraba State Police Command and other relevant authorities will be important in establishing the confirmed casualty figures and progress of any investigation.
