Nigeria’s Flamingos Beat Mexico 2–1 to Reach U-17 Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals
Goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan send Nigeria into the last eight, where the team will face Venezuela.

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2–1 in their Round of 16 encounter in Morocco.
The victory, recorded on Thursday, October 29, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, near Rabat, keeps Nigeria’s campaign alive and moves the team one step closer to the tournament’s final stages.
The Flamingos started the encounter with attacking intent, although Mexico initially threatened through attempts by Citlalli Reyes and Natalia Perez in the fourth and seventh minutes.
Nigeria gradually settled into the match and began creating opportunities of its own. Kanyinsola Yusuf and Mary Dunstan both made attempts at goal around the half-hour mark as the Nigerian side increased the pressure on Mexico’s defence.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 40th minute through Oluebube Umejiaku.
The Nigerian forward produced an impressive individual effort, taking the ball past three Mexican defenders before driving into the area and placing her shot beyond goalkeeper Ania Lopez.
The goal gave Nigeria the advantage going into the break and rewarded the team’s growing attacking pressure.
Mexico attempted to respond after the restart, but the Flamingos maintained their intensity and continued looking for opportunities to extend their lead.
Head coach Hakeem Busari made his first substitution by introducing Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who had sustained an injury during the first half.
The change formed part of Nigeria’s efforts to maintain its attacking threat as the match progressed.
The Flamingos eventually doubled their advantage in the 71st minute through Mary Dunstan. The forward finished from close range after a sequence of attacking play involving substitute Precious Oscar, registering her first goal of the tournament.
With a two-goal advantage, Nigeria appeared to be moving towards a comfortable victory. However, Mexico continued to push for a response and eventually found the net deep into second-half stoppage time.
Camila Campos scored for Mexico in the 100th minute, setting up a tense closing period as the Mexican side attempted to find an equaliser.
Despite the late pressure, the Flamingos held on to their advantage and secured the 2–1 victory.
The result confirms Nigeria’s progress to the quarter-finals, where the team is scheduled to face Venezuela. The South American side booked its own place in the last eight after defeating Germany in its Round of 16 fixture.
The victory represents another important opportunity for Nigeria to make an impact at the global youth competition. It also continues the Flamingos’ strong record of reaching the latter stages of the tournament.
Nigeria’s performance against Mexico highlighted the contribution of its attacking players, particularly Umejiaku and Dunstan, whose goals proved decisive.
Following the victory, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, pledged ₦2 million to the team. The Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Emmanuel Ikpeme, also pledged ₦1 million.
The financial pledges provide an additional show of support for the players as they prepare for the next stage of the competition.
The quarter-final encounter against Venezuela will present a different challenge for the Nigerian side. With a place in the semi-finals at stake, the Flamingos will need to maintain their attacking quality while remaining disciplined defensively.
Their victory over Mexico has kept Nigeria’s hopes of winning the tournament alive, but the team will have to build on the performance as the competition becomes more demanding.
For the players and coaching staff, the immediate focus will be preparation, recovery and tactical planning ahead of the quarter-final match.
