Describe the image

Nigerian singer and songwriter Mayorkun is celebrating 10 years in the music industry with the release of a new single titled Home Training. The song, released on October 30, 2026, arrives with an official music video and marks another milestone in the singer’s journey from an emerging talent to one of Afrobeats’ recognisable voices.

The anniversary comes a decade after Mayorkun introduced himself to a wider Nigerian audience with Eleko, the 2016 hit that helped launch his professional music career. His latest release also sets the stage for a forthcoming extended play (EP), Long Live, The Mayor!, expected on November 30, 2026.

‘Home Training’ explores the playful side of love

Produced by longtime collaborator Fresh VDM, Home Training explores the excitement of being with someone who brings out a different side of one's personality.

Mayorkun uses the familiar Nigerian expression “home training” as the foundation for the song’s playful message. The phrase commonly refers to the manners, discipline and values people are expected to learn while growing up. In the song, however, the singer turns the expression into a cheeky romantic idea about temporarily setting aside those rules when spending time with someone special.

Explaining the inspiration behind the track, Mayorkun said it was about the kind of love that brings out a different side of a person.

“Sometimes, love is about knowing when to behave and when to leave all that home training at the door,” he explained.

The song combines romantic themes with an upbeat Afrobeats sound, giving listeners a light-hearted record centred on attraction, spontaneity and enjoying the moment.

Official music video accompanies the release

The single arrived alongside its official music video, directed by Oluwaferanmi Olonade, popularly known as Mor.

The visual complements the song’s romantic theme, presenting Mayorkun in a creative studio setting as he paints a portrait of his love interest. The production also features stylish scenes, playful interactions and moments that reflect the track’s relaxed approach to romance.

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Dede Ashiogwu Precious appears as the lead female character in the video.

The release of the visual gives fans another way to connect with the song while extending the promotional campaign for Mayorkun’s forthcoming EP.

From ‘Eleko’ to a decade of Afrobeats success

Mayorkun, whose real name is Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, first gained major attention in 2016 after being discovered by Nigerian superstar Davido and joining Davido Music Worldwide (DMW).

His debut single, Eleko, quickly established him as an emerging name in the Nigerian music scene. The song's success earned him the Rookie of the Year award at the 2016 edition of The Headies.

He followed the breakthrough with songs such as Sade and Mama, building a catalogue that helped establish his melodic style and audience appeal.

In 2018, he released his debut album, The Mayor of Lagos, a project that further strengthened his reputation and gave rise to the nickname associated with his musical identity. His second studio album, Back in Office, followed in 2021.

Other popular releases and collaborations, including Geng, Betty Butter with Davido, Holy Father with Victony and Certified Loner, have helped maintain his presence in the Afrobeats conversation.

‘Long Live, The Mayor!’ introduces his next chapter

Home Training is the opening track of Mayorkun’s forthcoming five-track EP, Long Live, The Mayor!, scheduled for November 30.

His earlier single, Kaluba, is expected to close the project, while the remaining three track titles have yet to be fully disclosed in the available release listing.

The new project follows a busy period for the singer. He released Kaluba earlier in 2026 and also appeared on Bumpy Ride, a track on Tanzanian singer Harmonize’s album. Mayorkun has additionally featured alongside Davido and FOLA on B4 B4, continuing a musical relationship that he has previously said remained strong even after his time with DMW.

A milestone and a fresh musical direction

For Mayorkun, reaching 10 years in music represents an opportunity to recognise his growth while preparing for another phase of his career.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Africa, he identified impact as an important part of what he hopes to achieve over the next decade. He also spoke about reaching more listeners internationally and contributing to the development of younger and future artists.

With Home Training now available and Long Live, The Mayor! approaching, the singer is using his anniversary to celebrate his beginnings while introducing new music to his audience.

Ten years after Eleko, Mayorkun’s latest release is a reminder of how far his career has travelled—and a preview of what he hopes to deliver next.
