Super Falcons Receive ₦140 Million Each as President Tinubu Fulfils WAFCON Reward Promise
Tinubu Fulfils $100,000 Reward Promise to Super Falcons

Members of Nigeria's senior women's national football team, the Super Falcons, have begun receiving the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, following the fulfilment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's financial reward promise after their historic victory at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The development was confirmed by the National Sports Commission (NSC), which announced that the Federal Government had fulfilled its financial commitment to the players and members of the team's technical crew.
According to reports, each player is receiving approximately ₦140 million, depending on the applicable dollar-to-naira exchange rate, while members of the technical team and officials are receiving the equivalent of $50,000 each.
The payment represents the completion of the financial component of the reward package announced by President Tinubu in July 2025, following Nigeria's remarkable triumph over hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final.
Government Honours Super Falcons' Historic Achievement
The Super Falcons secured their record-extending 10th continental championship after producing an impressive comeback to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final played in Rabat on July 26, 2025.
Nigeria entered the second half trailing by two goals after Morocco dominated much of the opening period.
However, the Nigerian side demonstrated determination and resilience to turn the match around. Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty to reduce the deficit before Folashade Ijamilusi equalised for Nigeria.
The decisive moment arrived in the 88th minute when Jennifer Echegini scored the winning goal, completing a remarkable comeback and securing another African title for Nigeria.
The victory further strengthened the Super Falcons' position as the most successful team in the history of African women's football.
Tinubu Redeems $100,000 Promise
Following the team's historic achievement, President Tinubu hosted the players and technical crew at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on July 28, 2025.
During the reception, the President announced a financial reward of $100,000 for each of the 24 players and $50,000 for each member of the 11-person technical crew.
He also approved three-bedroom apartments for the players and technical crew under the government's Renewed Hope Housing Scheme, alongside the conferment of the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
The recent payment confirms that the President's financial commitment has now been fulfilled.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, expressed appreciation to the President for honouring his promise, describing the development as an important step towards recognising sporting excellence in Nigeria.
He noted that the fulfilment of the reward would encourage athletes to continue representing the country with confidence, knowing that their efforts and achievements would receive appropriate recognition.
Rasheedat Ajibade Appreciates Government Support
Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, also expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for fulfilling the financial promise.
The captain described the gesture as a welcome recognition of the team's achievements and contribution to Nigerian sports.
The development has also attracted attention because Nigerian athletes have previously experienced delays in receiving financial rewards and other benefits promised after international competitions.
A Boost for Nigerian Women's Football
The payment is expected to serve as encouragement for female athletes and emerging football talents across Nigeria.
For many young girls aspiring to become professional footballers, the Super Falcons' achievement demonstrates that dedication, discipline and teamwork can create opportunities for recognition on the international stage.
The government's reward package also highlights the importance of investing in women's sports and creating an environment where female athletes receive meaningful support.
The development follows a similar reward arrangement for Nigeria's senior women's basketball team, D'Tigress, whose players also received the equivalent of $100,000 each after winning the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket championship.
As the Super Falcons continue preparing for future international competitions, their latest reward represents more than financial recognition. It is a reminder of their contribution to Nigeria's sporting history and their position as one of Africa's most successful women's football teams.
