Nigeria's Flamingos Reach U-17 World Cup Semi-Finals After Dramatic Victory Over Venezuela

Nigeria's U-17 women's national football team, popularly known as the Flamingos, have secured a place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela in their quarter-final encounter on Sunday.

The thrilling encounter, played in Morocco, saw the Nigerian girls demonstrate determination, discipline and attacking ambition before eventually securing qualification through a late penalty converted by captain Azeezat Oduntan in the 89th minute.

The victory marks another significant achievement for Nigerian women's youth football and keeps the country's hopes of winning the tournament alive.

Late Penalty Sends Nigeria Into the Last Four

Both teams approached the encounter with considerable determination, understanding that a place in the semi-finals was at stake.

Nigeria enjoyed much of the attacking possession during the first half and created several opportunities to take the lead. However, Venezuela's goalkeeper, Valeria Rebanales, produced impressive saves to frustrate the Nigerian attackers and keep her team in contention.

The Flamingos continued to press for a breakthrough after the interval, with several players contributing to Nigeria's attacking efforts.

Among those who threatened Venezuela's defence were Kanyinsola Yusuf, Mary Dunstan, Tosin Rafiu and Oluebube Umejiaku.

Despite Nigeria's persistent pressure, Venezuela maintained a disciplined defensive structure, making it difficult for the West African side to find the back of the net.

The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages when Oluebube Umejiaku won a penalty for Nigeria. Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the referee upheld the decision.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan stepped forward and calmly converted the penalty in the 89th minute, giving Nigeria a crucial 1-0 advantage.

The Flamingos subsequently defended their lead during the closing minutes, including eight minutes of added time, to secure their passage into the semi-finals.

Impressive Comeback After Opening Defeat

Nigeria's qualification is particularly significant considering the team's difficult start to the competition.

The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Poland, raising questions about their ability to progress beyond the group stage.

However, the young Nigerian side responded positively, recording victories against Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea and Mexico to reach the quarter-finals.

Their subsequent victory over Venezuela further demonstrated the team's resilience, determination and ability to perform under pressure.

The team's progress also highlights the importance of preparation, teamwork and confidence in international youth competitions.

Brazil Await Nigeria in the Semi-Finals

Following their victory over Venezuela, the Flamingos will now turn their attention to Brazil, their next opponents in the semi-final scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Brazil secured their place in the last four after defeating China 2-1 in their quarter-final encounter.

The upcoming meeting promises to be a challenging contest, as both countries seek to secure a place in the final of the prestigious competition.

Nigeria will need to maintain its defensive organisation, improve its attacking efficiency and take advantage of scoring opportunities against the Brazilian side.

National Pride and Growing Women's Football

The Flamingos' achievement has generated excitement among Nigerian football supporters, with many celebrating the determination displayed by the young players throughout the competition.

Their qualification also represents an encouraging development for women's football in Nigeria, demonstrating the potential of young female footballers to compete successfully on the international stage.

As the tournament progresses, attention will be focused on the team's preparations and ability to overcome Brazil.

For Nigeria, the objective is now clear: secure a place in the final and move one step closer to lifting the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup trophy.

With determination, teamwork and continued support, the Flamingos have another opportunity to make the nation proud.
