Popular Nollywood actress Rachael Okonkwo, widely recognised by her screen name Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, has announced her appointment as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Film and Creative Industry Development to Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

The actress made the announcement on Monday, November 2, 2026, through a statement shared on her social media page, expressing gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve her home state.

Although the appointment was approved in September, Okonkwo only recently made it public. The development has attracted attention from entertainment followers and members of the Nigerian film industry, particularly because of her long-standing involvement in Nollywood.

Governor Peter Mbah Gives Actress New Responsibility

According to reports, Okonkwo's appointment was part of a wider list of government appointments approved by Governor Mbah on September 21, 2026.

The appointments were announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, and covered several government positions.

Okonkwo was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Film and Creative Industry Development, a position that places her within the state government's efforts to strengthen the entertainment and creative sectors.

Her responsibilities are expected to involve supporting the development of Enugu's film industry, encouraging emerging talents, promoting filmmakers and contributing to initiatives that can improve the state's creative environment.

The appointment is particularly significant because Enugu has a long history of involvement in Nigerian film production and is home to several talents who have contributed to the growth of Nollywood.

Rachael Okonkwo Expresses Gratitude

Reacting to the appointment, the actress expressed appreciation to Governor Mbah for the confidence placed in her.

In her announcement, she described the position as an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of the creative industry rather than simply an official title.

She also highlighted the potential of the creative sector to generate employment, support economic growth, preserve cultural heritage and promote Enugu State internationally.

Okonkwo explained that she hopes to use her experience in the entertainment industry to support upcoming talents, empower creatives and help position Enugu as an attractive destination for film, arts, culture and entertainment.

She further acknowledged the responsibility attached to the appointment, expressing her commitment to making a positive contribution to the state.

From Nollywood Actress to Government Appointee

Rachael Okonkwo, whose full name is Nnenna Rachael Okonkwo, hails from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

She became widely known through her performance in the popular Nkoli Nwa Nsukka movie series, which earned her the nickname by which many fans recognise her today.

Over the years, she has established herself as a familiar face in indigenous Nigerian films, building a strong connection with audiences through her acting performances.

Her appointment represents a transition into a new area of public service, allowing her to bring her industry experience into government administration.

Her understanding of filmmaking, acting and audience engagement could provide useful perspectives in developing programmes that support creative professionals.

Creative Industry Development and Job Opportunities

Nigeria's entertainment industry remains an important part of the country's cultural identity and economic activities. Nollywood, in particular, has helped promote Nigerian languages, traditions, stories and cultural values to audiences around the world.

However, the industry continues to face challenges involving funding, infrastructure, distribution, training and access to opportunities for emerging filmmakers.

Okonkwo's new position presents an opportunity to contribute to discussions and initiatives aimed at addressing some of these challenges within Enugu State.

If effectively implemented, programmes supporting young filmmakers, local productions, creative businesses and professional training could help create opportunities for people interested in entertainment and the arts.

Another Nollywood Actress Joins Enugu Government

Okonkwo is not the only Nollywood personality recently appointed by Governor Mbah.

Veteran actress Eucharia Anunobi was also appointed Special Assistant on Women Mobilisation for the Enugu-North Zone.

The appointments demonstrate the state government's decision to bring individuals with public recognition and professional experience into different areas of its administration.

For Okonkwo, the new responsibility marks an important chapter beyond her acting career.

As she begins this assignment, attention will be on how she translates her experience and stated ambitions into practical programmes that support filmmakers, emerging talents and the wider creative community in Enugu State.
