Osimhen’s brace sends Galatasaray top amid derby controversy

Describe the image

Nigeria international Victor Osimhen delivered a decisive performance on Monday night, scoring twice as Galatasaray defeated arch-rivals Fenerbahçe 2–1 in a heated Istanbul derby to return to the top of the Turkish Süper Lig.

The October 26 encounter at RAMS Park produced a memorable display from Osimhen, whose first-half goals gave the defending champions a crucial advantage. However, the excitement of the result was overshadowed by confrontations between players after the final whistle.

Osimhen strikes twice in commanding first half

Galatasaray started aggressively, looking to take control of one of Turkish football’s fiercest rivalries. Their pressure paid off in the 29th minute when Osimhen received a pass from Barış Alper Yılmaz, drove into the penalty area and fired a left-footed shot into the net.

The Nigerian striker doubled the lead just before half-time. Following a long throw-in from Ismail Jakobs, defender Davinson Sánchez sent the ball back towards goal, allowing Osimhen to head it home in the 44th minute.

The brace rewarded Galatasaray’s strong first-half performance. The hosts created several opportunities, while Fenerbahçe struggled to generate a serious attacking threat before the interval.

Osimhen’s goals once again demonstrated his importance to Galatasaray, particularly in high-pressure matches where individual moments can decide the outcome.

Fenerbahçe fight back after the break

Fenerbahçe returned from half-time with greater urgency and found a way back into the match in the 62nd minute.

İrfan Can Kahveci scored with an acrobatic overhead kick after the ball reached him inside the penalty area, reducing the deficit to 2–1 and giving the visitors renewed hope.

The visitors pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. One of their best chances came in the 90th minute, when Milan Škriniar’s header threatened to level the score, only for Galatasaray midfielder Mario Lemina to clear the ball near the goal line.

Galatasaray survived the late pressure to secure all three points. The victory lifted the club to 22 points from nine matches, placing it at the top of the league standings. Fenerbahçe remained on 16 points and dropped to fifth.

Post-match confrontation overshadows victory

The match did not end peacefully. Tensions escalated after the final whistle as players and staff from both sides became involved in a confrontation on the pitch.

Reports said the altercation followed a scuffle involving Fenerbahçe’s Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Galatasaray’s Roland Sallai. Players and members of the technical teams rushed towards the incident as tempers flared.

Galatasaray defender Abdülkerim Bardakcı and Fenerbahçe defender Archie Brown were shown red cards following the post-match altercation, according to Turkish media reports.

Fenerbahçe subsequently condemned the violence and called for an investigation and disciplinary action against those responsible. The club argued that the intensity of a derby should not excuse attacks on players. These were the club’s stated position and allegations; responsibility for any further sanctions rests with the relevant football authorities.

The incident could lead to further scrutiny of the conduct of players and staff, although any additional punishment would depend on official disciplinary proceedings.

A significant result in the title race

For Galatasaray, the win delivers more than local bragging rights. Defeating their closest rivals in such a high-profile fixture strengthens their position in the early-season title race and gives the team valuable momentum.

Osimhen was the central figure, turning two opportunities into goals and helping his side withstand Fenerbahçe’s second-half response. His performance also reinforced his reputation as a striker capable of influencing the biggest matches.

Yet the scenes after the game served as a reminder of the fine line between fierce competition and unacceptable conduct. As attention turns to possible disciplinary consequences, Galatasaray will look to maintain its league lead, while Fenerbahçe must recover from a damaging defeat.

For Nigerian football fans, Osimhen’s brace was the headline achievement. For Turkish football, the post-match controversy may prove to be the story that continues after the derby itself has ended.
