Nigeria Could Attract $100 Billion Annually From Diaspora Investments, NiDCOM Says

Nigeria could attract up to $100 billion annually in diaspora investments if the financial, professional and entrepreneurial resources of Nigerians living abroad are effectively harnessed, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has said.

The Commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, disclosed this on Friday, November 6, while announcing the ninth edition of the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS) 2026 in Abuja.

According to the Commission, Nigerians living abroad represent an enormous economic resource whose contributions could extend beyond sending money home to supporting businesses, infrastructure development and other productive sectors of the economy.

The projection comes as the Federal Government continues to pursue its ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

More than sending money home

For many Nigerian households, money sent by relatives living abroad provides support for school fees, healthcare, accommodation, daily expenses and small businesses.

However, NiDCOM believes the economic contribution of the diaspora could be significantly greater if more Nigerians abroad were encouraged to invest directly in the country’s productive sectors.

Rather than limiting their contributions to personal and family remittances, Nigerians abroad could participate in business development, infrastructure financing, capital markets and other investment opportunities.

The Commission says mobilising these resources could provide additional capital for economic growth, encourage entrepreneurship and create employment opportunities.

The announcement also reflects a broader government effort to position Nigerians abroad as partners in national development rather than simply sources of foreign exchange inflows.

The problem of trust

Despite the enormous investment potential, attracting diaspora capital has not been without challenges.

NiDCOM identified inadequate transparency, weak investor protection, unreliable information and limited confidence in institutions as major obstacles discouraging Nigerians abroad from investing at home.

For prospective investors, the decision to commit money to a business or project in Nigeria involves more than identifying an attractive opportunity. They also need assurances that their investments will be properly managed, protected and capable of generating reasonable returns.

Concerns about fraudulent investment schemes, unclear ownership structures, poor project management and difficulties resolving financial disputes can further discourage participation.

Dabiri-Erewa stressed that attracting diaspora investments would require credible institutions, transparent processes, reliable information and effective regulatory frameworks.

This suggests that Nigeria’s challenge may not simply be finding Nigerians willing to invest, but creating an environment in which they feel confident enough to do so.

What is the 2026 Diaspora Investment Summit about?

The ninth Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit, organised by NiDCOM in collaboration with the Nigeria Diaspora Summit Initiative, is scheduled to hold on November 10 and 11, 2026.

Themed Bridging the Trust Gap: Connecting Diaspora Capital with Credible Home-based Opportunities, the summit is expected to bring together Nigerians abroad, government institutions, financial regulators, investors, entrepreneurs and project developers.

The first day will focus on Nigeria’s capital market, including investment opportunities, financial instruments, risk management and safeguards for prospective investors.

Institutions expected to participate include the Central Bank of Nigeria, Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigerian Exchange Group and Ministry of Finance Incorporated.

The second day will concentrate on infrastructure investment, public-private partnerships, regulatory frameworks and opportunities for diaspora participation in national development.

The programme will also address business registration, due diligence, anti-fraud measures and consumer protection.

According to the Commission, the summit will provide participants with opportunities to engage directly with regulators, project sponsors and investment agencies to obtain information about investment procedures and available safeguards.

Can diaspora investment transform Nigeria’s economy?

Nigeria already benefits significantly from the financial contributions of its citizens abroad.

According to figures cited by NiDCOM from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s second-quarter 2026 statistical bulletin, formal remittance inflows through International Money Transfer Operators reached $1.57 billion in the second quarter of 2026.

This represented an increase from the $1.18 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

However, remittances and investments serve different economic purposes. While remittances often support household consumption and individual financial needs, investments can finance productive activities, expand businesses and potentially generate employment.

If properly structured, diaspora investments could support sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, technology, education, housing, manufacturing and infrastructure.

Nevertheless, the projected $100 billion represents an investment potential identified by NiDCOM, not an amount Nigeria currently receives annually.

Turning that projection into actual investments will depend on the country’s ability to build trust, strengthen investor protection and provide credible opportunities.

As the government seeks to attract more capital from Nigerians abroad, the success of its efforts may ultimately depend on whether it can offer something more convincing than promises: a transparent and reliable investment environment.
