Mohbad’s Family Demands Identity of US Laboratory Handling Liam’s DNA Test, Seeks Postponement
The late singer’s family wants the identity and accreditation details of the American laboratory handling Liam’s DNA test before the examination proceeds.

The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for the postponement of a scheduled DNA examination involving his son, Liam, while demanding full disclosure of the United States laboratory expected to conduct the test.
The latest development has renewed public attention surrounding the long-running paternity dispute involving the late singer’s family and his widow, Omowunmi Aloba, popularly known as Wunmi.
In a statement issued by the family head, Samuel Aloba, on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the family raised concerns about the arrangements for the DNA examination, particularly reports that biological samples would be collected in Lagos and transported to an undisclosed laboratory in the United States for analysis.
The examination was scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Mainland General Hospital/IDH in Yaba, Lagos.
However, the family wants the exercise postponed until the necessary explanations are provided and the outstanding issues surrounding the testing arrangements are addressed.
Family Questions Identity of US Laboratory
According to the family, one of its major concerns is the failure to disclose the full identity and location of the foreign laboratory expected to analyse the biological samples.
The Aloba family is demanding the laboratory’s full name, physical address, accreditation documents and evidence of its technical competence to carry out the examination.
The family also questioned whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, which it said was designated in a court order issued on May 5, 2026, would personally conduct the examination or simply collect the samples before sending them abroad.
It argued that there should be a clear explanation if the actual analysis would be carried out by another institution outside Nigeria.
The family maintained that any arrangement that materially differs from the court’s directive should be properly explained and, where necessary, presented before the court for clarification.
Concerns Over Handling of DNA Samples
Another major issue raised by the late singer’s family concerns the handling and transportation of the biological samples.
The family wants detailed information about how the samples would be collected, labelled, preserved and transported from Nigeria to the United States.
It also wants a reliable system that would allow all parties to confirm that the samples collected in Lagos are exactly the same ones received and examined by the foreign laboratory.
According to the family, proper documentation and monitoring are necessary to prevent possible contamination, substitution or mishandling during the process.
The family stressed that the credibility of the examination should not depend solely on the final laboratory report but also on the ability to independently verify every stage of the procedure.
It further expressed concern over previous questions surrounding the handling of biological samples during the post-mortem examination conducted following Mohbad’s death.
However, the family clarified that its concerns should not be interpreted as proof that the proposed DNA examination has already been compromised or that any individual or institution has been found guilty of wrongdoing.
Family Says It Is Not Against DNA Test
Despite its objections to the current arrangements, the Aloba family maintained that it is not attempting to frustrate the process or prevent the paternity question from being resolved.
Rather, it insists that the examination must be conducted transparently, professionally and in accordance with the relevant court directives.
The family believes that because of the sensitive nature of the dispute, every party involved should have sufficient information about the laboratory, the testing procedure and the protection of the samples.
It also requested adequate notice for all parties and their legal representatives before any rescheduled examination takes place.
The family wants the relevant authorities to address its concerns and obtain further judicial directions where necessary.
How Mohbad’s DNA Controversy Started
The paternity controversy involving Liam has remained a major subject of discussion since Mohbad’s death in September 2023.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, leaving behind his wife, Omowunmi, and their young son, Liam.
Following his death, his family became involved in several disagreements and legal proceedings, including questions surrounding his death, burial arrangements and the paternity of his son.
Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, subsequently pushed for a DNA examination to establish whether Liam is biologically related to his late son.
The matter eventually became the subject of court proceedings, with the court issuing directives concerning the proposed DNA examination.
In February 2026, reports emerged that three laboratories had been approved for independent DNA examinations.
However, the process encountered further complications after two of the proposed laboratories reportedly indicated that they could not conduct the required tissue-based examination involving samples from embalmed remains.
These developments contributed to further delays and disagreements over the appropriate arrangements for carrying out the test.
Nigerians Await Further Developments
The latest demand by Mohbad’s family has generated renewed interest in the case, particularly among Nigerians who have continued to follow developments surrounding the late singer’s family.
Many people believe that a properly conducted DNA examination could finally address the paternity dispute and bring clarity to an issue that has remained unresolved for years.
However, the controversy has also raised questions about the privacy and welfare of Liam, who has remained at the centre of the dispute despite being a young child.
For now, the Aloba family is insisting that the identity of the proposed American laboratory and the procedures for handling the samples must be made clear before the examination proceeds.
Whether the scheduled October 31 exercise will go ahead or be postponed remains subject to further clarification from the relevant authorities and any necessary court directions.
The public will be watching closely for the next development in a case that continues to attract widespread attention across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
