Jayson Tatum’s Overtime Buzzer-Beater Lifts Boston Celtics
The Boston star buried a 17-foot jumper as time expired to beat the Brooklyn Nets 125–124, capping a 40-point performance and securing the Celtics’ third consecutive victory.

Jayson Tatum delivered a dramatic finish on Tuesday night, October 27, scoring a game-winning jumper at the overtime buzzer to lead the Boston Celtics to a 125–124 victory over the Brooklyn Nets at TD Garden in Boston.
Tatum finished with a game-high 40 points, helping Boston extend its winning streak to three games. The thrilling result came after Brooklyn forced overtime with a late three-pointer, setting up a finish that kept the home crowd on edge until the final second.
Tatum delivers when it matters most
With Boston trailing 124–123 in overtime, the Celtics had one final opportunity to take the lead. With just 2.3 seconds remaining, Tatum received the inbound pass, moved into position and connected on a 17-foot jumper as the buzzer sounded.
The shot secured the one-point win and capped an outstanding individual performance.
Tatum shot 10-of-20 from the field and made 18 of 22 free throws, setting a career high for free throws made in a game. He also recorded eight assists and five rebounds without committing a turnover, according to the Associated Press.
The finish was particularly significant given the uncertainty surrounding Boston’s position in the closing stages. Rather than allowing the game to slip away, Tatum took responsibility for the decisive possession and delivered.
Nets force a tense overtime finish
Brooklyn made Boston work hard for the victory. The Nets held a 61–56 lead at half-time after building an advantage through the opening two quarters.
Boston responded strongly in the third quarter, hitting eight three-pointers to move ahead 86–82 entering the final period.
The teams exchanged leads late in regulation. Boston appeared to have taken control when Tatum found Derrick White for a go-ahead dunk, with White adding the free throw to make it 114–111.
However, Brooklyn rookie Mikel Brown Jr. kept the Nets alive by hitting a tying three-pointer with 0.2 seconds left on the clock, sending the contest into overtime.
The extra period remained tight. Brooklyn briefly moved ahead 124–123, but Tatum’s final jumper turned a difficult night into a memorable Celtics victory.
Supporting performances keep Boston in contention
Tatum was the headline act, but Boston also received valuable contributions from its supporting cast.
Paul George finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Derrick White added 16 points. Their contributions helped the Celtics recover after a difficult first half and remain competitive during the final minutes.
For Brooklyn, Michael Porter Jr. led the way with 27 points and 12 rebounds, while Julius Randle contributed 24 points and nine rebounds. Brown finished with 17 points, including the late three-pointer that forced overtime.
Despite the strong individual efforts, the Nets were unable to secure their first win of the season, falling to 0–4. Boston improved to 3–1, continuing its recovery after losing its season opener to Detroit.
Celtics look ahead after dramatic victory
The result gives Boston momentum as the early NBA season develops. Winning a close game against a determined opponent can provide confidence, particularly when the team has to recover from a half-time deficit and execute under pressure.
Tatum’s performance was also notable for his all-round contribution. Alongside his scoring, his eight assists and zero turnovers showed how he helped involve teammates while remaining the Celtics’ primary offensive option.
Boston is scheduled to face the Chicago Bulls on Friday, while Brooklyn will host the Detroit Pistons. Both teams will be looking to build on their latest performances, although their immediate priorities differ: the Celtics aim to extend their winning streak, while the Nets seek their first victory of the campaign.
For Celtics supporters, the game will be remembered for Tatum’s final shot—a perfectly timed jumper that transformed a potential defeat into a dramatic one-point win.
