PSG confirm surgery for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s ACL injury
The Georgian winger has undergone successful surgery in Doha after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, leaving Paris Saint-Germain without one of their key attacking players for an extended period.

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has undergone successful surgery after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The Georgian international is now expected to begin a rehabilitation programme as he works towards returning to competitive football.
The operation took place at Aspetar hospital in Doha, Qatar, according to reports published on 27 October 2026. Although the procedure was described as successful, PSG have not announced a definite recovery timetable, leaving uncertainty over how long the winger will be unavailable.
The injury represents a significant setback for PSG, who rely on Kvaratskhelia's pace, creativity and ability to take on defenders in the final third. His absence could affect the team's attacking options as the French champions continue their domestic campaign and pursue further success in Europe.
Injury suffered against Barcelona
Kvaratskhelia reportedly sustained the injury during PSG's 4–2 Champions League victory over Barcelona on 20 October at the Parc des Princes. The winger landed awkwardly during a challenge involving Barcelona defender Xavi Espart and was unable to continue. He subsequently left the pitch with assistance, raising immediate concerns about the seriousness of the problem.
The incident overshadowed an important European result for the Parisian club. Kvaratskhelia had been an influential attacking presence, making his sudden departure particularly concerning for the coaching staff and supporters.
Medical examinations later established the extent of the damage, leading to the decision to proceed with surgery. An ACL rupture is a serious injury because the ligament helps stabilise the knee during sudden changes of direction, acceleration and landing.
What the injury means for PSG
Kvaratskhelia's absence leaves head coach Luis Enrique with an important selection challenge. The winger offers more than goals: he can create chances from the left flank, carry the ball through crowded areas and draw defenders away from teammates.
Without him, PSG may need to adjust their attacking combinations and distribute those responsibilities among the players available. Other forwards could receive additional playing time, while the coaching staff may explore different formations depending on their opponents and the fitness of the remaining squad.
PSG have also faced injury concerns involving Ousmane Dembélé and captain Marquinhos following the Barcelona match. Reports indicated that both players suffered thigh injuries, adding to the club's concerns about player availability during a demanding period of the season.
Recovery and rehabilitation
ACL injuries typically require a lengthy recovery. Many professional footballers need six to nine months or longer before returning to competition, depending on the severity of the injury, the treatment required and their response to rehabilitation.
Kvaratskhelia's precise recovery period remains unconfirmed, however, and it would be premature to state that he will definitely miss the remainder of the season. His progress will depend on medical assessments and how quickly he regains strength, stability, mobility and confidence in the injured knee.
The rehabilitation process usually progresses from restoring movement and reducing swelling to strengthening the surrounding muscles, followed by running, football-specific exercises and a gradual return to team training. Medical clearance is essential before a player resumes competitive action.
PSG supporters await further updates
For PSG, the immediate priority will be managing the squad while allowing Kvaratskhelia the time needed to recover properly. Rushing a return from a serious knee injury can create further complications, making a careful, medically supervised approach important.
The injury also comes during a period of heightened attention on the winger. Reports placed Kvaratskhelia sixth in the 2026 Ballon d'Or rankings, reflecting his standing among leading players in world football.
For now, PSG supporters will be hoping the surgery marks the beginning of a successful recovery. While his absence creates a challenge for Luis Enrique's side, the club has yet to set a return date. Further updates on his rehabilitation should provide a clearer indication of when the Georgian star might be ready to play again.
