Describe the image

American rap superstar Jay-Z has been announced as the headline performer for the 2027 Super Bowl halftime show, putting one of hip-hop’s most influential figures at the centre of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

The National Football League (NFL), Apple Music and Roc Nation confirmed the news on October 26, 2026. Jay-Z is scheduled to perform during Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The announcement marks a significant moment in the rapper’s career. For years, his entertainment company, Roc Nation, has helped advise the NFL on its live music programming and produce the Super Bowl halftime show. Now, Jay-Z will move from helping shape the event to becoming its featured performer.

The confirmation was made during the Dallas Cowboys’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. An announcement video showed Jay-Z at SoFi Stadium, accompanied by a playful reference to the phrase “GOAT,” commonly used to describe someone considered the greatest of all time.

From choosing performers to becoming the headliner

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter, has been closely connected to the Super Bowl’s entertainment programme since Roc Nation partnered with the NFL in 2019. The company became involved in advising on musical performances and executive-producing the halftime show, which has featured major artists including Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, The Weeknd, Rihanna, Usher, Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny.

His own appointment is particularly notable because Jay-Z had previously been reluctant to perform at the event. In 2018, he rapped about turning down a Super Bowl opportunity in his collaboration with Beyoncé, “APESHIT.” He later explained in interviews that he wanted the opportunity to perform on his own terms rather than under conditions that dictated which other artists should join him.

The new announcement signals a change. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had hoped Jay-Z would eventually take the stage himself when the time felt right. The league’s partnership with Roc Nation has continued to influence the music and cultural direction of the annual championship event.

A celebration of three decades in music

The announcement also arrives during a year celebrating 30 years since Jay-Z released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt, in 1996. The rapper has marked the anniversary with performances and special events, including concerts at Yankee Stadium and SoFi Stadium.

Across his career, Jay-Z has built a catalogue that includes influential albums such as The Blueprint and The Black Album, as well as popular songs including “99 Problems,” “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” and “Empire State of Mind,” his collaboration with Alicia Keys. He has also expanded into artist management, music publishing, business and sports through Roc Nation.

Jay-Z has won 25 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. He was also the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, reflecting his influence beyond recorded music.

Who could join Jay-Z on stage?

The headliner announcement is likely to prompt speculation about possible guest appearances, particularly given Jay-Z’s extensive network of collaborators and Roc Nation’s connections across the music industry.

His wife, Beyoncé, has headlined the Super Bowl halftime show and appeared as a guest during another performance. Other artists connected to Jay-Z’s catalogue and musical career may also attract attention as the event approaches. However, no guest performers have been confirmed in the announcement, so any predictions about the lineup remain speculation.

The 2027 show will be broadcast across ESPN and ABC, with streaming options including Disney+, according to the official announcement.

A major moment for hip-hop

Jay-Z’s appointment brings together his three-decade recording career and his role in shaping one of the world’s most watched music performances. His appearance at Super Bowl LXI will be a milestone both for the rapper and for the continuing prominence of hip-hop on the NFL’s biggest stage.

Fans will now await further details about the production, possible guest artists and the songs Jay-Z chooses to perform when the event arrives on February 14, 2027.
