Governor Sanwo-Olu returns to the Lagos Fashion Week runway.
The Lagos governor makes his second documented runway appearance, modelling an off-white traditional-inspired outfit for Nigerian menswear designer Ugo Monye at the 2026 fashion event.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has returned to the runway at Lagos Fashion Week, surprising fashion enthusiasts and guests with an appearance for Nigerian designer Ugo Monye during the event's 2026 edition.
The governor walked on Saturday night, October 31, at the Federal Palace Resort, Victoria Island, Lagos, during the final evening of the main runway presentations. His appearance attracted attention from the audience and quickly became a talking point across social media.
Dressed in an elegant off-white ensemble designed by Monye, Sanwo-Olu joined professional models to showcase the designer's work. The outfit combined traditional Nigerian caftan styling with a kimono-inspired design and was completed with a beige fedora.
Photographs and videos from the event showed the governor walking confidently along the runway, exchanging gestures with spectators and acknowledging the applause.
Sanwo-Olu explains why he returned to the runway
Following the appearance, Sanwo-Olu shared photographs and footage of his runway experience on his social media platforms.
He explained that he stepped away from his regular governance responsibilities to support Ugo Monye and celebrate the people contributing to Lagos's fashion and creative industries.
The governor described the experience as enjoyable and congratulated the designer and other creatives working to strengthen Lagos's reputation as a centre for fashion, culture and artistic expression.
His message also reflected his administration's stated interest in supporting the creative economy, which includes fashion, entertainment, music, film and other cultural industries.
Sanwo-Olu's appearance was therefore presented not simply as a personal fashion moment but also as a public show of support for Nigerian designers and the wider creative community.
A second runway appearance since 2023
This is Sanwo-Olu's second documented appearance on the Lagos Fashion Week runway since he became governor in May 2019.
His first appearance took place on October 28, 2023, when he joined professional models to close Nigerian designer Emmy Kasbit's presentation. On that occasion, he wore a light-blue patterned blazer over a dark T-shirt and blue trousers. Images from the show captured him smiling and blowing a kiss towards the audience.
At the time, the governor connected his participation to the economic potential of the fashion industry, describing creativity as more than an artistic activity and highlighting its ability to support economic growth.
His return in 2026 continues that public association with the fashion event and its efforts to promote Nigerian designers.
Ugo Monye brings Nigerian menswear to the spotlight
The designer behind the governor's latest runway appearance, Ugo Monye, established his fashion label in 2009.
The brand initially catered to both men and women, with a stronger focus on female clients, before gradually shifting towards menswear. It has since become a familiar name at Lagos Fashion Week, featuring in several editions, including 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Monye has also used well-known personalities to showcase his designs. In 2024, Nigerian singer Davido walked for the label in a brown traditional-inspired outfit accessorised with beads, a matching cap and a staff.
The designer's work often draws on Nigerian cultural references, presenting traditional-inspired clothing through contemporary styling. Sanwo-Olu's off-white look at the 2026 event reflected that approach, combining familiar traditional elements with a modern runway silhouette.
Lagos Fashion Week celebrates African creativity
The governor's appearance formed part of the 2026 Lagos Fashion Week programme, which ran from October 28 to November 1 under the theme “CRAFTED: Heritage. Innovation. Circular Futures.”
Founded by Omoyemi Akerele in 2011, Lagos Fashion Week provides a platform for Nigerian and other African designers to present collections, connect with buyers and industry professionals, and introduce their work to wider audiences.
The 2026 edition featured more than 60 designers from across Africa. Its theme highlighted the relationship between cultural heritage, innovation and more sustainable approaches to fashion.
Saturday's closing programme also featured presentations by Nigerian labels Fruché and Ejiro Amos Tafiri, alongside Monye's showcase. The event concluded with offsite presentations on Sunday, November 1.
Beyond the runway: The governor's engagement with fashion
Sanwo-Olu's relationship with Lagos Fashion Week extends beyond modelling.
During the 2025 edition, he hosted designers and other creative professionals at Lagos House, Marina, at a reception attended by American singer Ciara. He also joined Ciara for a closing-gong ceremony at the Nigerian Exchange as part of the fashion week's activities.
These engagements reflect the Lagos government's public efforts to associate the state with fashion, culture and the wider creative economy.
The governor's latest appearance has once again brought attention to the relationship between public leadership and the creative sector. While reactions to his runway walk varied across social media, the event provided a prominent platform for Ugo Monye's designs and highlighted the visibility Nigerian fashion can receive when influential figures participate.
As Lagos Fashion Week continues to connect African designers with international audiences, Sanwo-Olu's return to the catwalk has become one of the memorable moments of the 2026 edition.
