Brighton Stun Manchester City at the Etihad as Ayari’s Early Strike Seals Historic Win
MANCHESTER — Brighton & Hove Albion produced a disciplined performance to secure a 1–0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Yasin Ayari’s early goal proved decisive, as Fabian Hürzeler’s side absorbed sustained pressure to claim all three points.
The result was significant because Brighton had faced City in the Carabao Cup just days earlier, when Guardiola’s team eliminated them following a penalty shootout. This time, however, the Seagulls found a way to turn that disappointment into motivation, delivering a determined display that ended City’s home run and affected the Premier League standings.
Ayari Makes the Difference
Brighton took the lead after 11 minutes through an attacking move. Full-back Maxim De Cuyper delivered a pass into the space behind City’s defensive line, allowing Ayari to move into a promising position. The Swedish midfielder remained composed and guided his finish beyond goalkeeper Ederson.
The goal gave the visitors an advantage they would protect. Although City had much of the possession, Brighton stayed organised, limited the space available to their opponents and looked for opportunities to threaten on the counter-attack.
Verbruggen Keeps City at Bay
Manchester City responded by increasing the pressure and controlling much of the match. Pep Guardiola’s side recorded 61 per cent possession and attempted 19 shots, but struggled to turn their dominance into an equaliser.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was central to the visitors’ success. The Dutchman made six saves, denying City on several occasions and showing confidence throughout the match. His interventions included efforts from close range and attempts from outside the penalty area.
Brighton’s defenders also played their part, making crucial blocks and maintaining their shape whenever City moved forward. The visitors received three yellow cards as they worked to disrupt the hosts’ attacking rhythm, but their defensive organisation remained intact.
City Dominate Without Reward
City completed 88 per cent of their passes and enjoyed greater control of the ball, yet they lacked the cutting edge needed to break down Brighton’s defensive structure. Despite creating opportunities and registering six shots on target, the hosts could not find a way past Verbruggen.
At the other end, Brighton made the most of their limited possession. With 39 per cent of the ball, Hürzeler’s team focused on staying compact and choosing its moments to attack. Ederson was called into action twice, helping City avoid a heavier defeat.
A Statement Victory for Brighton
The final whistle brought contrasting emotions inside the Etihad Stadium. City were left frustrated after failing to convert their territorial advantage into goals, while Brighton celebrated an away victory.
For Hürzeler, the performance demonstrated the importance of discipline, patience and effective defending against elite opposition. For Guardiola, the defeat will raise questions about City’s attacking efficiency and their ability to break down well-organised teams.
Brighton’s win was more than a response to their recent cup elimination. It was a significant result that underlined their ability to compete with one of the Premier League’s strongest sides.
