Arsenal End 14-Year Anfield Wait with Gritty 1-0 Win Over Liverpool

LIVERPOOL — Arsenal delivered a statement in the Premier League title race on Sunday, earning a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield. The result marked their first league win at the stadium since 2012 and strengthened their position at the top of the table.

Kai Havertz scored the first-half goal, giving Mikel Arteta’s side three crucial points and a three-point advantage over their closest challengers. Arsenal combined attacking efficiency with disciplined defending to withstand pressure from the hosts. However, the contest also produced controversy, with Liverpool frustrated by a penalty appeal rejected by the referee and video assistant referee.

Havertz Makes the Difference

Arsenal took the lead in the 16th minute through a counter-attack. Declan Rice advanced down the flank before sending a cross into the penalty area. Havertz read the delivery, arrived at the right moment and guided the ball beyond goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

The goal gave the visitors an advantage, but Liverpool responded by increasing their intensity and taking control of possession. The home side pushed Arsenal deeper into their half and searched for an equaliser through attacks.

Liverpool came close when summer signing Florian Wirtz struck powerfully towards goal. His effort beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar, denying the hosts an equaliser. Despite creating pressure and opportunities, Liverpool could not find a way through Arsenal’s defence.

Arsenal Stand Firm

Liverpool continued to press after the interval, seeking a breakthrough in the closing stages. Arsenal, however, remained organised, limiting the space available to the home side.

Centre-backs William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães played important roles in maintaining the visitors’ defensive structure. Their positioning, strength and communication helped Arsenal deal with Liverpool’s forward movement. The Gunners also tracked runners and contested possession to protect their narrow lead.

Arsenal’s resilience proved decisive, as Liverpool were unable to register a shot on target in the second half. The clean sheet underlined the visitors’ discipline and gave Arteta a result away from home.

Penalty Appeal Fuels Frustration

The final whistle did not end the tension. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk expressed frustration over a penalty appeal involving Alexander Isak, who appeared to have his shirt pulled by Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber inside the penalty area.

Liverpool players appealed strongly, but the referee allowed play to continue, and VAR did not recommend an on-field review. The decision angered the home side and became a major talking point after the match. Nevertheless, Arsenal held on to secure victory.

Title Race Implications

The result gives Arsenal a three-point cushion at the top of the Premier League table and ends their long wait for success at Anfield. It also provides Arteta’s squad with confidence as the title race develops.

Liverpool must recover from the defeat and address their missed chances. Although their possession and pressure were impressive, they lacked the finishing touch needed to change the outcome. Arsenal leave Merseyside with three valuable points, an away win and renewed belief in their title ambitions.
