Rivers United and Rangers share points in NPFL clash
A second-half equaliser and a late red card shaped a tense 1–1 draw, leaving both title contenders level on points at the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table.

Rivers United and Enugu Rangers played out a hard-fought 1–1 draw in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 11 encounter at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday, November 1.
The result kept both sides level on 18 points, with Rivers United retaining first place and Rangers sitting second. However, Rangers have played two fewer matches, giving the defending champions an opportunity to move ahead if they collect maximum points from their outstanding fixtures.
Mbaoma gives Rivers United the early advantage
Rivers United began the contest with urgency, looking to make home advantage count against one of their closest title rivals. The hosts created several opportunities in the opening stages, with Abdulrasheed Dabai playing an important role in their attacking moves.
Dabai came close in the eighth minute with a curling effort that narrowly missed the target. Two minutes later, another promising move created an opportunity for Ekene Awazie and Ubong William, but Rangers' defence managed to block the attempt.
The pressure eventually produced a breakthrough in the 17th minute. Rangers goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh moved out to deal with Alex Oyowah, who had taken advantage of a loose back pass. Oyowah then sent the ball across the goalmouth, allowing Chijioke Mbaoma to finish into an unguarded net.
Rivers continued to threaten after taking the lead. Mbaoma had another opportunity, while Dabai nearly doubled the advantage from a dangerous free-kick. Jimoh, however, made important interventions to keep Rangers within reach.
Obaje brings Rangers back into the contest
Rangers returned for the second half with greater attacking purpose and gradually found ways to trouble the Rivers United defence.
Five minutes after the restart, Mbaoma nearly extended the hosts' lead. A long pass from Oyowah sent him through on goal, but his effort struck the crossbar.
Rangers made the most of their opportunity in the 54th minute. Chidiebere Nwobodo drove forward from the left and delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Rivers goalkeeper Ifeanyi Nchekwube initially punched away the ball, but the defence failed to clear the danger.
Godwin Obaje reacted quickest to the rebound and headed home to make it 1–1. Rivers United players protested, believing the Rangers forward was offside, but the referee allowed the goal to stand.
The equaliser changed the atmosphere of the match, with both teams searching for a decisive second goal.
Red card puts Rangers under pressure
One of the biggest moments came in the 69th minute when Obaje received a second yellow card for continued dissent towards the referee. The Rangers goalscorer was sent off, leaving his team to finish the encounter with 10 players.
The dismissal gave Rivers United an opportunity to increase the pressure. The hosts pushed forward in search of a winner, while Rangers dropped deeper and concentrated on protecting their point.
Rivers came close through Samson Olasupo, whose effort forced a point-blank save from Jimoh. The Rangers goalkeeper was injured during the resulting scramble but received treatment and continued.
Jimoh remained busy in the closing stages, making further saves to deny Oyowah and substitute Junior Aimufasa. Despite six minutes of added time, Rivers could not find a breakthrough.
Rangers held on to secure a valuable away point from a difficult fixture.
What the result means for the NPFL title race
The draw leaves Rivers United at the top of the table with 18 points from 11 matches, while Rangers are second with the same number of points from nine games.
The result is significant for both clubs. Rivers will be disappointed not to have converted their early advantage and numerical superiority into a victory. Rangers, meanwhile, can take confidence from recovering after conceding first and defending successfully after Obaje's dismissal.
The wider league picture also shows how competitive the early title race has become. Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars are among the teams also sitting on 18 points, making every fixture increasingly important.
For Rivers United, the immediate challenge is to turn strong performances into victories and protect their position at the summit. Rangers will aim to build on their resilience while making their outstanding games count.
Sunday's draw may not have settled the title contest, but it underlined the quality and determination of two clubs expected to remain among the leading contenders this season.
