FG Approves ₦631.3bn for Nine Road Projects Across Nigeria

The Federal Government has approved ₦631.3 billion for nine road infrastructure projects across Nigeria following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the approvals on Wednesday, October 28, after the council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

According to the minister, the projects cover different parts of the country and involve the reconstruction, rehabilitation and improvement of major road corridors.

The approvals include projects in Ekiti, Kogi, Kano, Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Abia and other locations, with the government saying the interventions are intended to improve transportation networks and facilitate the movement of people and goods.

Among the projects approved is the reconstruction of the 95-kilometre Etuke–Okeni–Ankpa–Otopa Road in Kogi State, valued at ₦167 billion. The council also approved ₦209 billion for the reconstruction of the 81.1-kilometre Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road in Ekiti State. The project includes a bridge.

Another major approval covers the Tungo–Karamti Road linking Adamawa and Taraba states. The project was valued at ₦62 billion and includes the construction of five bridges.

In Kano State, the government approved ₦89.2 billion for the Bichi Ring Road project, which includes a flyover.

The council also approved ₦28.218 billion for the rehabilitation of a 17-kilometre section of the Sokoto–Illela Road, designated Route A1.

An additional ₦20.257 billion was approved for an 18-kilometre road connecting Asiago to the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway.

The approvals also include ₦14.486 billion for the Dikko–Maje link road in Niger State and ₦11.33 billion for a road project in Abia State previously undertaken by the state government under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited tax-credit scheme.

The council further approved ₦30 billion for remedial works on deteriorated sections of the East–West Road.

Umahi said the projects were part of the government's efforts to address infrastructure deficiencies and strengthen road connections across the country.

Road infrastructure is an important component of transportation in Nigeria, where highways connect communities, commercial centres and agricultural areas. Poor road conditions can increase travel times, vehicle maintenance expenses and the cost of transporting goods.

The approved projects are expected to improve access along the affected corridors when completed. However, the actual benefits will depend on construction progress, the quality of the work and the maintenance of the roads after completion.

The approval of the contracts does not, by itself, mean that all the projects have been completed or that motorists will immediately experience improvements.

Details concerning implementation schedules and progress at the individual project sites will be important in determining how quickly the projects deliver their intended benefits.

The Federal Government has continued to identify road construction and rehabilitation as part of its infrastructure development programme. The latest approvals bring renewed attention to the execution of federal road contracts, particularly the need to ensure that projects are delivered according to their specifications and approved budgets.

The Ministry of Works is responsible for overseeing federal road infrastructure, including the supervision of construction and rehabilitation projects under its jurisdiction.

Further information on implementation will help clarify when work will commence or advance on the approved corridors and when road users can expect to benefit.

The nine projects represent a substantial financial commitment to road infrastructure. Their eventual impact will be determined by the completion of the works and the condition of the roads after they are opened to traffic.
