Burna Boy makes history at Ballon d’Or ceremony
The Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar becomes the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at football’s prestigious ceremony, honouring Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka for his humanitarian work.

Nigerian music star Burna Boy has made history on the global stage after becoming the first Nigerian artiste to present an award at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. The singer presented the 2026 Sócrates Award to Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka during the ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday, October 26.
The occasion marked the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or awards and the first time the ceremony was held in London. Burna Boy’s appearance highlighted the growing presence of Nigerian music stars at major international sporting events, bringing Afrobeats into a celebration traditionally centred on football’s biggest names.
The singer, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, appeared in a tailored black suit as he took to the stage to present the award. Beyond the fashion moment, his role connected two prominent figures with Nigerian roots: Burna Boy, one of Africa’s most internationally recognised musicians, and Saka, who represents England and has Nigerian heritage.
Burna Boy speaks about supporting Nigerian football
Before presenting the trophy, Burna Boy spoke about a football academy he established to help develop the game in Nigeria. He expressed hope that the initiative would eventually help Nigerian players reach the highest levels of international football and earn recognition at events such as the Ballon d’Or.
His comments gave the moment a wider significance beyond entertainment. Nigeria has produced footballers who have competed at the highest level, but Burna Boy’s ambition is to see more homegrown talent receive international recognition.
The singer has also performed at major sporting events, including the 2023 UEFA Champions League final kick-off show. His latest appearance continues his connection with the global sports industry.
Bukayo Saka honoured for charity work
Saka received the Sócrates Award for his humanitarian work with BigShoe, an organisation that helps children access essential medical care.
Reports say the Arsenal forward supported life-changing operations for approximately 120 children in Kano State in 2022. In 2023, he also supported medical procedures for another 100 children in Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania.
During his acceptance speech, Saka highlighted the importance of giving children opportunities to live healthier lives. He also shared the story of a young beneficiary from Rwanda who received eye care through the initiative, explaining how treatment helped the boy return to everyday activities, including reading in school.
Established in 2022 by France Football in collaboration with Peace and Sport, the Sócrates Award recognises footballers who use their influence to support humanitarian causes and social development. Previous recipients include Sadio Mané and Vinícius Júnior.
Adekunle Gold also represents Nigeria
Burna Boy was not the only Nigerian music star at the ceremony. Singer Adekunle Gold, also known as AG Baby, attended the event and announced that he would perform at the after-party. His appearance added to the visibility of Nigerian music at this year’s awards.
The involvement of both artistes reflects the continuing crossover between African music and international sporting events, where performers increasingly help bring entertainment and football audiences together.
A milestone for Afrobeats
Burna Boy’s Ballon d’Or appearance is a significant moment for Nigerian entertainment. By presenting an award at one of football’s most prominent ceremonies, he represented the country’s music industry on a global platform while drawing attention to football development at home.
His message about nurturing Nigerian talent also offered a reminder that international recognition can be about more than individual success: it can inspire investment in the next generation.
